First-time buyers — support and common myths
Interest deduction, starter loans, and myths first-time buyers should know.
21 January 2026
Support and incentives
Rules and programs change — always verify with Skatteverket, your municipality, and your bank. First-time buyers have historically benefited from:
- Ränteavdrag (interest cost deduction on home loans)
- Municipal housing queues (not available everywhere)
- Banks’ starter products or amortization exceptions in some cases (terms vary)
Myths to challenge
| Myth | Reality | |------|---------| | "I need 20% down" | Often 15%, but banks can require more individually | | "Variable rate is always cheapest" | Depends on rate outlook and how long you stay | | "The monthly fee doesn’t matter" | Co-op fees are a major part of housing cost |
